Geographic features

Tagajo City is positioned in approximately the center of Miyagi Prefecture and is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Nearby are Sendai City, the prefectural capital, Shiogama City, which is a famous fishing port, and Matsushima, one of the “Three Views of Japan.”

As for the topography, Tagajo is oblong in the east-west direction, and is divided into two parts by the Sunaoshi River that runs right through the center. There are historical sites scattered about the eastern and northern portions of the city. There is a manufacturing quarter on the southern plains near the sea and a vast area of fields spreading across the plains of the western area.

Main industries

A plan was devised to concentrate industry by designating the “Sendai Bay Area” as a new industrial city to serve as a base of ocean side development in 1964. It has been transformed into a mega manufacturing quarter that currently functions as the heart of the local economy.

Metal parts, general machinery, electric machinery and food manufacturing form the primary axis.
