Geographic features

Located on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku district, approx. 300 km from Tokyo. 70% of the prefecture is mountainous with the Ou Mountain Range serving as the eastern border with Miyagi Prefecture,and the Asahi Mountain Range in the western part of the prefecture. Farmland accounts for 13% of the total area, while 72% is forest. The Mogami River flows through the central part of the prefecture.
