Capital of Niigata Prefecture. Niigata City became the first government-designated city on the Sea of Japan side of the Island of Honshu on April 1, 2007. The city is found where the Shinano River and Agano River empty into the Sea of Japan. The landscape consists of glades, coastal dunes, and numerous lagoons.
