Geographic features

 Kyoto Prefecture is located roughly at the center of the Japanese archipelago. A long, narrow strip of land runs from the north, on the coast of the Sea of Japan, to the south. The Tamba mountain range located almost in the center divides the climate of the prefecture into the Sea of Japan type, and the inland type. The jagged coastline along the Tango and Chutan regions is an area bestowed with beautiful scenery and natural harbors. The area from the Chutan region to the central region is largely mountainous, and the Katsura and Yura Rivers both originate in the Tamba mountain range and flow through the prefecture, with the Kameoka, Fukuchiyama, and other river basins spreading around them. The Kyoto-Otokuni and Central Yamashiro-Soraku regions are where the Yamashiro basin extends around the juncture of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu Rivers.
