Geographic features
Located in Gansu Province in the northwestern corner of China. Dunhuang City is an oasis that prospered as a fork in the Silk Road. It is on the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and the western end of the Hexi Corridor. Since long ago, it has been used as an entrance and exit to the central area and western area. The Talimu Basin is to the west, the Gobi Desert to the north and the Qilian Mountains and Qaidan Basin to the south.
