Tradition

Deer in Nara will bow when they get shika senbei (deer rice crackers) from people. More than 1,000 years ago, people believed that deer in Nara Park were messengers of Kasuga Daimyojin (the Great-illuminating-deity of Kasuga), and it is said that they imitated people’s bows during festivals in those days.
